A big part of overcoming overeating is the ability to focus on enjoying what you are eating, and you can’t do that if you are starving or trying to satisfy a craving with something else. It is often a "healthier" choice to eat what you really want, starting with a small amount, instead of eating what you deem a "healthier" alternative. When you don't feel satisfied psychologically, you won't feel satisfied physically until you have eaten to the point of actually feeling sick.
If you find yourself on the brink of a binge fest, try this:
- Take one bite, truly enjoy it and think about why you enjoy it.
- Take another bite and see if taste the same. If not, it’s time to stop eating that food. Every bite should be as good as the first.
It takes patience and awareness, but by eating enough of the foods you like and doing so mindfully, you can overcome overeating.
