Ever Google which fats are best to eat? Or what about just want to know if coconut oil is really good for you? You will find hundreds of different nutrition answers and articles out there and each one will say something that you want to believe. Unfortunately, many of these articles are not science-based or even written by credentialed experts. Nutrition is an ever evolving science and one that interests just about everyone. It is easy to find headline grabbing information from just about any study, but it is a lot harder to really examine what is being said or proven. And most people are happy to expose how big business is ruining our food or believe that there is a magic pill for weight loss.
But, what if there was one place where you could go to get up-to-date, science-based nutrition information from Registered Dietitians? A place where RDs post tested, delicious recipes with easy instructions or a site where you can just ask a question and get an answer from a knowledgeable professional? Believe it or not that place exist and it's called Slendr. I started writing for and consulting with Vish Vishwanathan about 6 months ago when I was first made aware of what he was trying to do for RDs and nutrition information. He explained that the idea for Slendr came about when he realized that modern society was becoming increasingly more reliant on pharmaceuticals rather than focussing on a healthy diet approach. He believes people can live healthy, happier and longer with a well balanced diet. However since every individual is different, there is no one size fits all approach to eating. That’s where he saw Slendr making a difference. Slendr connects users to registered dietitians around the world who can provide personalized advise based on individual needs. Think of it as the “Uber for diet”.
According to Vish, Slendr has benefits for both both users and dietitians. It provides a place where users can get reliable nutrition advice from registered dietitians on relevant topics such as weight loss, diabetes, heart disease, sports nutrition, allergies, pregnancy, kids and more. For dietitians, Slendr offers a digital platform to publish nutrition tips, connect with health conscious users and become social influencers. Whether a dietitian is looking to advance his/her career, build a consulting practice or simply showcase expertise, Slendr is a perfect fit.
To me Slendr makes sense and I can't believe I didn't think of it as I am always complaining about nutrition articles and the lack of accuracy in many of the things I read. But Vish has a knack for finding ways to solve problems with easy solutions. He is a serial entrepreneur who has built and grown several hi-tech businesses. Previously, he founded a successful e-commerce software business which was acquired by a global corporation. He has over 20 years of experience in the software industry and has provided strategic consulting for companies like BMW, Wendy’s, Qwest, Borden Foods and others. And, he knows when to bring on experts in a field outside of his comfort zone (i.e. me).
Slendr isn't going to solve our nutrition information problem overnight, but it is a definitely a great place to start.
